Be sure to put you camera settings on the highest resolution, so that even when you blow up your pictures to a big format, they still look good! Also, if your camera has the possibility and you want to make adjustments to the pictures in Photoshop, try and save your pictures in both JPEG and RAW. You will find this gives you more possibilities to make post-processing changes.

This will take more room on your memory card, but if you have a good backup system that shouldn't be a problem.

This brings us to the subject of storing your pictures. You wouldn't be the first nor the last to find out that important pictures have gone missing. And that, to say it mildly, is not a good start of the day. Be sure to create a backup system, preferably on- and offline. So burn a disc of pictures and keep them in a dark and dry place, or get an (external) hard drive and save them there. If you can, try opening up an online photo-account. For instance flickr.com or 500px.com and save your pictures there.
