Light consists of a lot of different colors and they all have a different frequency. Now, without getting you back to school with your science teacher, it means that depending on the light circumstances your pictures will have a more dominant color which you can see as a sort of glow on your picture. Try and see the difference when you take a picture with candle light, the sun, light bulbs or TL lights. You will see some look much 'colder/slightly blue' and some 'warmer/slightly red'. This is why they talk of temperature when they talk about white balance. Try your camera to find where you can adjust your camera for the different circumstances.
